Safe mode is the only mode

I lost two hours today trying to launch something on my computer, which required to be updated, which needed to retrieve files from a server, which was prevented from doing so possibly because of some other update, which might have been because of a proxy, or might have been down to a variety of processes running on my machine, which might have been worth looking into given a bit more time, but then i thought I should call the help desk, oh the irony, the guy who can help you wakes up in 6 hours, so safe mode it was.... and it worked.
