Wellington

This is Wellington's cable car. Although called a cable car, it is actually a funicular railway between the main shopping street and the suburb of Kelburn in the hills overlooking the city. The Wellington Botanic gardens and parts of the University can also be reached from the top.
It was opened in 1902 to provide access to the new residential areas above the rapidly growing city. It is still used by commuters and students, but is also a popular tourist attraction.

Fortunately today's weather was much clearer than yesterday, so the views from the top were clear. We caught the train to the top, then walked back down into town through the botanical gardens.
