Down to the Wire

or under the wire, both expressions originate with American horse racing at the turn of the 19-20th century. No race tracks close by . . . but I have mentioned elsewhere that the antelope do not jump wire fences but crawl under so in most barbed wire fences the lowest strand is plain.

I had thought of going down to the wire and posting at a minute before midnight.
