Herrngarten, Darmstadt

What a contrast: the memorial of the too early deceased Princess Elisabeth (1895-1903), daughter of Grandduke Ernst-Ludwig of Hessen and his first wife Melita. On the journey back from a family meeting with their Csar relatives, the much loved princess became infected by typhoid fever and died, incurable in those days. Ten thousand followed the coffin, and this memorial was erected ”by the children of Darmstadt”. The impressive standfast plane trees nearby will have stood here in 1903, presumably.
