Beacon Hill

We enjoyed a 7 mile walk with two friends who we haven't seen for some time.  It was a delightful walk climbing up and down several hills, walking across heathland and along some very secretive fern strewn valleys.  We came across some lovely banks of colourful primroses, see extras.  The  weather held out and it was fairly warm in sheltered areas away from the strong winds.  After lunch at Tipton St Johns we came back along by the river before heading up through Harpford Wood.  A good varied walk.

I have just come back from seeing a film that one of our book club members had got hold of.  Its called Black Narcissus by Rumer Godden and we were interested as we had just finished reading one of her later novels that we all enjoyed.  It was quite a surprise as the film was very old (1947) and the style of cinema at that time so very different.  Although set in a very exotic location it was all filmed in the studios and you could almost see the scenes and cameras filming.  Not to mention their voices.  I think I will have to read the book as I am sure a lot of the atmosphere was lost.  It just shows how a well written book can still be read today and convey so much whereas a film can be outdated and loose the atmosphere.  It was however an important film of that time.
