Hospitality returned

Our second community-sponsored Syrian refugee family invited some members of the support group to a meal today. There was an immense spread of traditional dishes all impeccably cooked by the young wife who is only 24 years old. She and her husband (29) have three small children. Today was the 5th birthday of the eldest child (see extra, with his sister) - so there was cake too!

The family have recently moved from their first, rather poky, dwelling into a nicer house which has the advantage of being opposite the home of the first family we welcomed two and half years ago. That family is well integrated into the community now and this one is likewise putting down roots and embracing new opportunities with enthusiasm.

We sang Happy Birthday  in English and Welsh and left stuffed to the gills. Our chief satisfaction however is in knowing that these new members of the community are  established now and, for all the shortcomings of life in Britain today, they can look forward to a future that did not exist for them when they were displaced, insecure and unsupported in a conflict zone. Thousands like them are out there still but these few at least are safe.
