New Birdfeeder-- no birds

After seeing blips here with peanuts in wire bird feeders I am trying them, too. What are sold in the U.S. as "spanish peanuts" seem to be too large for the wire feeder holes. Perhaps the kind in Europe are smaller? The nuts definitely do not go through the holes. Not longer after I hung it a couple of chickadees flew right up to try. After much discussion they left and no birds have returned.
Just wondering if you have opinions or suggestions.
I am considering taking the peanuts out and crushing them. Or putting them in one of those nylon nets with larger holes.
Or... what if our birds do not care for peanuts? Well, I know the squirrels and crows would like them, but that was not the goal.
