Silbury Hill

A trip to Avebury today. A fascinating place, and a grey start turned into a gloriously sunny day so we saw it at its best. We walked the perimeter of the great stone circle, visited the very sensitively done museum in the barn, night pretty things in the Elements of Avebury shop, looked into the quirky and interesting church, had an excellent lunch at the National Trust tea room, and the walked along the stream and up the hill to West Kennett Long Barrow (which was amazing - and oh, the views!). On the way we passed Silbury Hill, which made a tempting shot silhouetted against the afternoon sun.

Back in the car for a short detour to see some white horses carved into the hillsides, and up to the lookout at Hackpen to give J the chance to fulfil a lifelong ambition to walk (if only for a short distance this time) on the Ridgeway. I think this sense of walking where our ancestors have walked for over 5000 years was even more evocative than the grandeur of Avebury.

Altogether, a very good day.
