Beyond the coltsfoot flowers and reeds across the loch is Mains Castle where apparently Mary Queen of Scots stayed the night before her defeat at the Battle of Langside. The castle was built in 1450 and first occupied in 1478 but became derelict after being fired on during a skirmish in 1678.  It was partially restored in 1883 but the roof collapsed in a storm then almost 40 years ago it was renovated and was recently on sale again for under £500 with pictures here.

EDIT;   Thakns to those observant blippers who noticed my mistake.  Yes the price should have been £500,000.

This is part of my occasional series on places connected with the famous, but tragic, Mary Queen of Scots (see the tags)
