Things have been a bit arschüberellenbogen here today.

The word arschüberellenbogen has not been coined before today - at least not according to my dictionaries.

It is a composite word comprised of "Arsch", "der Arsch" for those of you curious as to what article it takes.  It means the thing that you sit on (not the sofa or couch, that's "das Sofa" or "die Couch").  "Über" in this context means "over" and not; about, above, across, via or hyper.  (Der ) Ellenbogen is "the elbow" and the only thing vaguely amusing/interesting I know about that is that there is a small village near to here called Katzenelnbogen (cat's Elbow).

Putting all three together we get, as a 1:1 translation, "arse-over-elbow".

Naturally there are terrific German words for describing such a situation - Kuddelmuddel, Mischmasch, Wirrwarr & Tohuwabohu* - all spring to mind. But in order to explain such a Scheißtag, it really needs an Arsch to be involved.

I've been unhappy for most of the day.  But it could be much worse.

*You could use der or das as the definite article for these.
