Here we go again!

Theatre du soleil, Parc de Vincennes

It was quite a hike to la Cartourcherie in the Parc de Vincennes. This shows the theatre goers having dinner before the show, which was Robert Lepage's controversial, Kanata. The audience loved it (standing ovation) and it was interesting for us to see this representation of Canada performed for a French audience, but I'm afraid we were not won over. There were some visually beautiful scenes, as always with Lepage, but it did seem to simplify the stories of the indigenous women it purported to tell and became a play about representation and who has the right to speak... with some comic elements about a French actor trying to lose his accent to succeed in North America that seemed out of place with the rest of the tone of the play. I'm no theatre expert and and am still thinking this one through; it was definitely an uncomfortable experience for us.
