A concrete love affair

This is Leicester calling

Along similar lines to yesterday's blip, but captured firmly within radio range.

This is the Freemans Common medium wave (AM) transmitter site. It broadcasts independent commercial station Sabras Sound on 1260 and BBC Asian Network on 837.

I love the radio heritage Leicester is home to with BBC Radio Leicester being the first local radio station in the UK, launching in November 1967 on 95.05 VHF. Part of the schedules in the early days were dedicated to serving the large south Asian community in the city, this service forming the foundation of what is now the national BBC Asian Network. Indeed I heard on a 2007 Radio 4 program that listenership was so high, in summer, it was possible to walk the streets and hear the program through open windows.

In 1989 BBC Radio Leicester moved to 104.9 and the powerful Copt Oak site covering the whole county on FM. Until that year the Freemans Common site had simulcast Radio Leicester, making the switch to a service almost wholly dedicated to the Asian community.

An esteemed radio heritage I am really proud of.
