Was It Really So Long Ago

83/365: How Do your Cowslips Grow?

We have a corner in the garden that is deliberately unkempt. The grass is cut once per year and the coarser grass removed by being dug out. Otherwise it is seeded with wildflowers - an ongoing experiment that has some failures, but many successes. And so to the cowslips. I'd spotted them growing on a long spring-time walk along the South Downs way, admired them and decided our garden would be incomplete without them. The seeds were readily available and soon sown (note to all, seeds must be sown, never planted, that's simply wrong) into moist compost and left... for a long, very long time. After an even longer time, it became clear that this method of nurturing and cosseting was not succeeding and so, I liberally spread the remainder of the seeds into the wild corner of the garden and forgot about them.

Tada!!

And the moral of this story is, guidance, encouragement and the correct environment is often helpful, but sometimes the youngsters need to find their own way in this world...
