Barcelos Rooster

There are thousands of souvenir Barcelos Roosters in Barcelos.
And there are tens of thousands more throughout Portugal.

The 17th century story goes that a crowing rooster saved a man from the gallows, and in the process scared many of those that thought he should pay the penalty for a crime he adamantly denied. When the rooster crowed, the man was set free before the knot in his sentence was tightened.
