Borthwick Castle

Borthwick Castle is about 15 miles south of Edinburgh and another place with links to Mary Queen of Scots who stayed there in 1563 and in 1567. After the murder of Mary’s husband, Lord Darnley, she fled to Borthwick from Edinburgh with her new husband,  the Earl of Bothwell.   As he was implicated in the murder and very unpopular with the nobles, an army of 1000 men surrounded the castle but Bothwell managed to escape after being warned.  Mary then managed to escape through a narrow window disguised as a man and rode off to meet Bothwell. However her freedom was short lived as five days later she was confronted by the nobles at Carberry Hill and subsequently imprisoned at Lochleven Castle  and then in England.
This is part of my occasional series on places connected with the famous, but tragic, Mary Queen of Scots (see the tags)
