Book Club

This afternoons's book club was held in a flat in Kendal with a splendid view over Kendal from her balcony. We dicussed the Poets Wife by Judith Allnatt. A fictional tale of the life of the wife of real life poet John Clare 1973- 1864.  Clare, the son of a labourer, is considered to be one of the most important poets of the 19C  with a primary school in his home village of Helpston named after him, but he was quite mad and ended life in Northampton General Lunatic Asylum.  He had 7 children and his wife's life must have been extremely hard with his poetry bringing in not enough enough to support them.
