Life doesn't come with an instruction manual.
We probably would have thrown it away, because "we know what to do, it will be easy".
Sometimes we have a few screws left over or nuts without bolts, and that is ok, because life won't fall apart.
If you are left with an extra table leg, or three instead of four, then one has to be concerned, go back as far is needed and try again. 
When one is left with an arm rest, two hinges  and a table leg with only too-short-to-be-of-any-use pieces of string to hold it together, it is time to abandon and start again.
