prototrike

Seeing as they're upright it would easily be possible to have the circle described by the pedals of a direct-drive-hub trike almost the same size as the front wheel to reduce the disinclination of such systems to turn under the power of wee legs, perhaps lowering the seat and making the whole thing slightly recumbent in order to prevent the closeness of the front wheel to the seat negatively affect the resistance of the rider/trike system from falling forwards when encountering an insurmountable obstacle, such as a small stone or slight depression in the grass. Perhaps by spending less time making something have a huge handle on the back and more time adding proper pedals driving a proper chain driving the wheels would be an idea the manufacturers of trikes might like to consider. Even as a youngling these things seemed more like an exercise in getting the widely-spaced feet to move in tiny circles (necessarily keeping the centre of the pedal in the centre of the sole of the foot rather than directly beneath the ball) than achieving the relatively friction-overcoming human-powered motion that bikes and trikes are supposed to be for.

Upon returning from our overnight stay with friends in Glasgow the wingpiglet was happily pleased to see us rather than narked that we'd buggered off somewhere without him and had apparently gone to bed nicely and slept the whole night through and not started bellowing for porridge until the clock turned green on his first solo overnighter with the Ayrgrandparents.
