Sikhs in Leith

Turning a corner, we encountered a procession of Sikhs, jewels in the oddly hot sun, handing out treats. A man darted towards me from behind a truck in which a bright clutch of women sat and sang, and gave me the shiniest red apple. The women wore dazzling saris, the men vibrant colours or smart suits. And look - bare feet on the rough Scottish ground. The younger men were in t-shirts and bandanas. I imagined them in The Wire, shouting “Five-oh!”.

We found out this was a Nagar Kirtan procession to celebrate Vaisakhi. Sikhs understand community and the importance of fruit.
