Sparkling Water, Seals & Penguins

Today was a bit more touristy and unfortunately a lot more crowded and commercialised.

A tour of the peninsula started with a drive to Hout Bay and a ferry boat trip to watch the seals on and around Seal Island. (Extra 1) Quite nice to see but frankly a bit of a con.

We continued on along the coastal roads, enjoying truly spectacular cliff and sea views, including Hanging Mountain & Chapman’s Peak before Cape Point itself at the south-eastern most point of South Africa. This included a good walk, in a strong but warm wind, so we really enjoyed the beauty of the rugged landscape and crashing waves. It is here that the warm south-west flowing Agulhas current of the Indian Ocean meets the colder Benguela current of the Atlantic Ocean resulting in a terrific diversity of marine life.

Our last tour stop was at Boulders Beach, home to a penguin colony. All v cute indeed but the area was hugely over populated with people so we took our shots and left. The beach right next to the tourist trap was far better. (Extra 2)

At the end of the day we were dropped in Camps Bay for sundowners... which ran into dinner :-) A good day in all.
