Unlike yesterday’s bluebells which are all the native fragrant British bluebells, I wonder if these might be hybrids of the British and Spanish bluebells.   No hybrids were recorded in the wild before 1963 but in many areas native bluebells are now at threat especially since people have planted Spanish bluebells in gardens.   Almost all the other bluebells in the hedge opposite are the native variety but the upright nature of the pink flowers causes me doubt.  (The colours are not right as the pink were really pink and the blue were a deep blue and only the white flowers are the real colour)
Once bluebells were believed to be linked with fairies who could be summoned by their bells ringing but if a human heard one ring they would soon die!  A person would be compelled to speak only the truth if they wore a wreath made of bluebells – not something likely to be seen in any court today!   If a girl could turn one of the flowers inside out without tearing it she would eventually win the one she loves.
