Another Try

Last year a pair of Great Crested Flycatchers nested in one of our boxes. Sadly their newly hatched chicks were eaten by a snake, at least that's what we figure. This year they're back and nesting in a 'secret' location. Probably in one of the boxes in our 'BackBack'. Those boxes are much higher off the ground and hopefully not as easily reached by hungry serpents. Conventional wisdom suggests that the higher a snake needs to climb to reach a nest the more likely it is to be spotted by a hawk or owl. Then the predator becomes the prey! This GCF, a female most likely, paused for a moment on our feeder pole with a mouthful of Sable Palm fiber, a nest-building material coveted by both birds and squirrels.
