Remembering the rememberers

In 1868, this memorial celebrated Harriet Catherine Grenville. She used her position as the wife of the Earl of Ellesmere to found a servants school that diverted women from working underground. When the monument went into storage, four small sculptures of a collier, craftsman and mill girls vanished. Years later, Walkden Rotary club and Salford Council raised money for their restoration. Working with local schoolchildren, Brian Hewitt made it happen. Sadly Brian died at 60 and was buried in the shadow of the memorial he helped save. Your legacy isn't just about the £s.
