The Trenches

An extensive network of First World War training trenches crosses the southern part of the commons. These trenches are cut approximately two metres deep into the Wealden clay and the persistent heavy rain of the past few days is rapidly filling them. The spaniel isn't a very bright dog and the distinction between shallow puddle and deep water doesn't seem to have occurred to him. I've learnt that pulling a spaniel out of a steep sided water filled trench isn't easy. We are both trying to dry off now.
