Cape Recife lighthouse

This lighthouse was built in 1857 for alerting ships entering and exiting Algoa Bay of many treacherous shallow reefs. It is 24 meteres high and is situated in a nature reserve about 7 kms outside Port Elizabeth. Cape Recife boasts some of the finest examples of fynbos along this coast. It also has prolific birdlife and is a popular area for fishermen. I have never seen sand dunes like these there - they must be the result of the many gales we have had recently. It was a misty afternoon which added to the atmosphere.
