Veteran oaks

The Soke of Peterborough is surprisingly well endowed with veteran trees. The very oldest specimens are hidden from public view in the grounds of Milton Park, where jackdaws and ravens breed in their gnarled forms, but many others are associated with field boundaries and are visible from roads and footpaths. This is one of the best aggregations, with several really sizeable old oaks, at least 400 years old, looking particularly vibrant in their spring green finery against a classic April sky.

The footpath I was following runs along the boundary of two ancient woods, allowing me sneaky views of sheets of bluebells and ramsons, as well as some fine stands of wood melick and yellow archangel (see extra) A very enjoyable afternoon walk - and I only got slightly wet!
