Hairy Woodpecker (female)

It's the larger of the two small woodpeckers in our region--less common than the downy woodpecker, which is the other. This is certainly my best female hairy image, and it might be my only one--a male would have had red on the back of its head. Here's a Wiki page. The day started out with clear skies for a change; though clouds came fairly soon, they remained thin and disappeared for much of the afternoon.  We spent the morning at the Fort River refuge, and had a fair number of other birds--best was the blue-winged warbler, less well seen than last year; it's quite uncommon, though it may nest at Fort River,
