Strange Fly

I sometimes think that I’ve seen everything in my garden, then something different comes along. This fly was about the same length as a large blowfly, but it was only half as wide. It was striped in different shades of brown, and its eyes were reddish brown. Here it is slurping something from the flower stem of a baby perpetual spinach beet. In keeping with the rest of its body the tongue is brown too. I can’t find out anything about this fly.
