Magnanimous in defeat
Ha! Where was your Messi tonight, Pepe?!
As Finn and I almost missed watching one of the greatest comebacks in football history, Pepe kindly organised a WhatsApp video call for me and Finn to see the second half, when it became 2-0 and 3-0 in very very close succession. Very.
We were just about able to make out the players and we could occasionally see the ball too. From the direction of the running, we knew whether to be elated or fearful (it was becoming too good to be true).
We even saw the sublime fourth goal from a corner kick.
But I was under very strict instructions to have Finn in bed by 9.10 pm at the latest, as Mrs Raheny left the house to go to her sound therapy birthday freebie (Laura Lucy banging softly on various bongs and other soothing percussion instruments*).
I hope that she comes back all relaxed. And that she never finds out that Finnzy-Bob was jumping up and down in a state of frenzied expectation until the final whistle.
* I too may have in my twenties dabbled with a form of relaxation involving bongs. while listening to Frank Zappa, Magma or Ozric Tentacles. I think it may have been a lot more potent than Laura Lucy's version.
