Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Darlene Love - Marshmallow World (1963)
This 1949 song was originally a hit for Bing Crosby the following year. Darlene Love was the the lead singer in a session group called the Blossoms, based in Los Angeles, who appeared on countless records and TV shows of the era. They stood in for the Crystals on Phil Spector's production of He's A Rebel and she recorded a number of songs for Spector without being given due credit. He apparently broke a promise to her that she would be the singer on the song River Deep, Mountain High.
This comes from the classic album A Christmas Gift For You From Philles Records, which Spector produced in August-September 1963 at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood. He used his regular arranger Jack Nitzsche and the engineering skills of Larry Levine, and most of Philles' signings, such as the Ronettes, the Crystals and Bob B Soxx and the Blue Jeans performed on the album, backed by the Wrecking Crew.
Although the record has sold enormously well over the decades, initial sales were very poor as the album was released on 22 November 1963, the same day as the assassination of President John F Kennedy.
