Silene dioica - Red Campion

The definition of a weed is a plant growing where you don't want it.  So a rose in the middle of a field of cabbages may be, to some people, a weed.  My gardening tends to be more wildlife orientated rather than neat and tidy.  The result is plants which many call weeds grow unmolested.

Red Campion is a very common plant of woodland and roadside verges.  Like many flowering plants it has the male and female on separate plants this is known as dioecious hence the species name.  Red Campion are an important plants for pollinators including Hoverflies, bees and butterflies.
