Wildings

My walk to the supermarket used to take me over abandoned land. Then a fence appeared, blocking the route, which we all climbed over until it disintegrated. Then machines appeared, and workmen and notices about how they were thoughtful about the community. As they flung new blocks into the sky, they built walkways through the shrinking bits of land so we could get to Sainsbury’s without vandalising anything.

The current walkway juts over the railway embankment, where tough wildflowers are attracting butterflies. Wildflowers are the 60s girl singers of the plant world. This poppy could be in The Ronettes.

Today the workies high above me shouted “Don’t walk along there, doll!” Perhaps they thought I was in danger of toppling onto the tracks. Hardly any trains use them and they only travel at night.
