THE CONTEMPLATIVE LIFE...

...seems very attractive to me today. Mr Grumpy B & I went to Rievaulx Abbey which should have been soothing to the soul. After coffee in the restaurant, where we were stalked by predatory chaffinches (extra) whose ancestors probably begged crumbs from the Abbey kitchens, I left B sitting under some trees (extra) and wandered off to soothe my soul by myself which was far more satisfactory! More extras, including the obligatory ancient monument-dwelling pheasant.

We then had a picnic in Helmsley Castle, by which time moods were lightened. The drive there and back was so beautiful with absolutely clear sparkling air and wonderful views across the dales and hills.
