Upcycling

I've always liked the weathervane on this summerhouse, and the fact that the stone is actually upcycled from the ballast taken off the pirate John Gow's ship and dumped on a small outer island. Given the Hoose was built in the 1730s it just goes to show that the idea of reusing perfectly serviceable goods (even if they come with a rather unpleasant back story) is truly ancient. In fact, it's only very recently that we lost it and now seem to have to have the concept sold to us. What weird creatures we are!

What started as a trip to a beach to search for 'groatie buckies' (tiny cowrie shells) turned into an extended traipse into Kirkwall to investigate hiring a rotavator for after we'd moved rocks and watched the weeds die. Somehow the deal we were given was too good to miss so now the rotavator is sitting outside waiting to be used. I feel some hard labour coming on ...

PS (for anyone who may be interested) the Groatie Hoose does feature some treasured 'lucky' groatie buckies but you'll be hard put to find them on this blip - far too small, I think!

PPS Given the projected busyness please forgive lack of comments just for now; too much to sort today to free up my tomorrows, if you see what I mean!
