During our walk along part of the Sandstone Trail in the Peckforton Hills I noticed this bright beetle (Malachius bipustulatus) among the yellow Creeping Jenny flowers.   The Red tipped flower beetle is very aptly named and showed up well as it feasted on the flower pollen.  (Extra) It approached a caterpillar which I think is that of the Mottled Umber moth (Erannis defoliaria) and was suddenly attacked and quickly the beetle retreated to continue its meal.
According to data on the National Biodiversity Network atlas the Malachius bipustulatus beetle has not been recorded in Scotland but there are a number of records of the Mottled Umber moths throughout the country, so I was fortunate to see the beetle.
