The Walled Gardens At Mottisfont House

After a lazy breakfast at the hotel, we set off for home, stopping on the way at Mottisfont House, a NT property between Romsey and Stockbridge. It's a fascinating house, originally a Cistercian priory from the 1200s until the Dissolution when Henry VIII swapped it for the villages, as they were then, of Chelsea and Paddington; in the 1930s an art loving couple bought it as a weekend home and it is now kept as they redesigned it.

There are beautiful grounds with a riverside walk but the main attraction is the massive walled gardens, in particular the roses, clematis and peonies which are all putting on a fine show at present.

We managed to see it all in fine weather, only running in to rain as we reached Stonehenge.

We called in to catch up with Chris who had thoroughly enjoyed his best man duties yesterday.
