Ortigia and much walking

We had decided to spend the day exploring Ortigia where we are staying and which is a small island just off Siracusa. The plan is to walk around the island following the coast and the diverge into the back streets of the centre.

We soon came across the Castello Maniace. This fortress was built in around 1240. Although largely in ruins substantial parts remain to be explored. In the 19th Century it was bestowed on the Duke of Bronte, sometimes better known as Admiral Lord Nelson. Luckily we had chosen to set out fairly early as it was almost empty of visitors when we arrived, but filling up fast when we left.

By the afternoon we had started our exploration of the interior of the island. The photograph today is taken somewhere in one of the small streets.

Nice dinner in another fish restaurant. It turned out to be cheaper than the appearance and quality would have suggested.
