The Sphynx

Having had a lovely walk with Peter yesterday, as well as Sunday along with some Girlguiding friends, today was about taking myself slightly out of my comfort zone, by way of a trickier scramble.

It’s not often I blip people but this shot of Intothehills kindly pointing out the Sphynx gives an idea of our altitude, the drop, the narrow path that is the Climbers Traverse, the scree, and the sheer fun of it.

We started from Seathwaite and made our way to Great Gable, then headed for Nape’s Needle along the Climber’s Traverse. The rock being dry and grippy meant that even the scree sections were easily do-able and the surprisingly clear conditions afforded a spectacular view of Scafel Pike as we ate lunch.

Then a fun grade 2 scramble up the Sphynx Ridge to the summit from where we could see right out across the valley floor to the coast. There were some hairy moments when the view down was truly terrifying but it was worth it!
