Lairg - Tongue

Day one of a long-planned bike tour round Sutherland with Nick and Stu.

Distance: 38 miles
Weather: Sun, snow, sleet.
Wind: Strong cold northerly (in our faces)

As we drove north, the temperature kept dropping and when we got out the car in Lairg it started snowing. The first 15 miles were all climbing and arriving in Altnaharra, I started feeling a bit dizzy. (months of thinking about training had not paid off)

Much better after hot soup and scones with Bobby and Anne, although I couldn't speak very much.

Only another 16 miles into the icy wind and through some great wild landscapes.

We arrived at Tongue in a blizzard and found the pub had sold our pre-ordered steak pie suppers to someone else.

A cold beer didn't do much to warm us up, but they managed to rustle up some more food for us, before we free-wheeled down the hill to the youth hostel in freezing hail and darkness.
