What's in a name

Container ships are dominating the world seas for years and years now. Getting bigger and bigger. Also the companies are getting bigger. Small companies have no chance to survive. This is the CMA CGM Blue Whale. How on earth can you put such a name on a ship?. CMA CGM stands for the merger combination of Compagnie Maritime d'affretement and Compagnie Generale Maritime. If you have to put these complete names on your ship, than even the ships side would not be long enough. Container business is risky business. See the five high stacked containers on deck. Properly lashing is almost impossible, so a lot of containers are lost overboard every year all over the world. And what to think about the problem of empty containers littered all over Europe, while they are needed in the Far East. There is simply not enough cargo to be shipped from West to East as the opposite way, leaving enormous numbers of empty containers in the West.
