The Vessel (TKA)

We started the day with walking the High Line which is an old disused railway Line that sits above the NY streets and has been made into a public walkway. It’s just over a mile long and has lots of art and sculptures along the walkway as well as community gardening projects. I love the design and how the old track is incorporated. You can get on and off the high line along the way and The Vessel, (temporary name), is at Hudson Yard. It’s a fabulous piece of new architecture by British, Thomas Hearherwick, who also designed the London Olympic Cauldron and the new Routemaster Bus. I absolutely love it and it was the best bit of new architecture I saw on this trip.
The Vessel opened this year and there’s a website devoted to finding it permanent name, and popular is Shawarma (kebab) or the Hive for obvious reasons.
There were lots of new things to see on, and from the High Line, and the end we got off at in the Meat Packing District has also undergone a lot of regeneration and the warehouses turned into restaurants and shops.
As if this wasn’t enough excitement for one day, at tea time we went to the Top Of The Rock for the iconic views of Manhattan and beyond. We’ve been before and it is incredible and you can’t quite believe your there but it was great to see Mum’s initial reaction.
