Bridge

Me? I’m an Engineer. A Metaphorical Engineer. My job is to check that structures are not overloaded by the metaphorical weight that they carry. If you think about it; walls, towers, tunnels - they all come with a lot of metaphorical baggage. Get the calculations wrong and you can get a catastrophic metaphorical collapse. Not pretty. At the moment, I’m working on this bridge. Now, bridges are always a bit tricky - with their connotations of crossing over something, of passing over, simultaneously joining and separating. A lot going on. And this bridge, in particular, is a bit of a problem. As you can see, it joins that island to the mainland. And the island is the site of the city’s cemetery. I think that we might have bitten off more than we can chew with this one.

Metaphorically speaking.
