Win some, lose some.

We were out at 5am to do our monthly Wetland Bird Survey. It was a pretty cheerless morning - very overcast and feeling cold and damp, but there was plenty of bird song which lifted the spirits, especially Song Thrushes, which were in fine voice. We were pleased to see our Common Sandpipers - the signs were that they had a nest somewhere, but we didn't see it. There was only one Great -crested Grebe around which made us think that there had been no successful breeding this year.  We missed last month's count as we were away, so we can't compare with today's - I wonder how much impact the recent cool conditions and heavy rainfall had impacted on the breeding.
