Riding the rails

I remember reading an article in Popular Science when I was in high school about a guy who modified his bicycle to fit on old abandoned rail-road tracks and he was making his way across the country. Very near the top of my list of life goals is to ride a bicycle across this country(US), thinking about riding it on the smooth, quiet rails of yesterday would be very cool, unless you ended up like the cartoon characters riding their little push cars into the the tunnel and WHAM or BAM a train comes along and ruins the day.
