Hill Top Ramblings

Bad day, good day

I awoke to the sound of the hens going crazy. Rob had let them out early when he went to check his moth traps. When I looked out of the bedroom window there was a great big fox! I raced down and there he was standing over the body of one of my hens. He ran off leaving the corpse behind, and all the hens very upset.
We spent ages making them a bit of an enclosure but we will have to wait and see if it deters the Fox.
Later we managed to find time to check the beehives. Rob managed to catch a huge ‘prime swarm ‘ out of one of the other hives yesterday and they are now in a new hive and very busy making wax. The photo shows how the cells on the reverse side are exactly off set from those on the front, giving the sheet great structural strength. This piece of comb had been built overnight but I had to remove it as it was where a frame needed to fit.
There are a huge number of bees in there, and if the weather comes good next week we could be in for a good crop of Lime flower honey, as the trees are about to flower. Fingers crossed!
