A Sting In The Tale

Mr Flum, in doing some tidying-up in the garden, found an old Bergenia pot into which a fern had self-set. By attempting to pull out the fern he let loose an army of wasps, one of which punished him for disturbing their home by stinging him, fortunately just the once.

After the antihistamine cream had been satisfactorily dispensed I went out to inspect the pot, aiming the camera where a wasp or two entered or wandered up to the surface - however, they didn't pose nicely.

Then I realised that the main activity was busy taking place where the pot had been standing, sheltering the nest - Mr Flum had moved it and that was what caused their anger. This shot is focused on their main entrance; at any given time there were half a dozen crawling in and out, or flying to and from these overlapping twigs and many more, apparently uncertain what they ought to be doing, buzzing about.

I think I'll wait until nightfall before venturing out again, then repot the bergenia and put a slab over the nest site. Then we can wait until after the frosts before further action.
