Eskmills weir

By Eskmills in Musselburgh a path begins that runs up the side of the Esk to Whitecraig and beyond. The five of us went for a walk up there today. Before long you reach the weir that provided the water that powered the mills that gave the area its name. You can jump down off the path and scramble along the side of the river to the bottom of the weir. The river was quite swollen from many days drizzle but I'm sure the flow down the weir is generally unaffected by river levels due to part of the stream being diverted into the industrial estate. Nevertheless, the water looks great crashing down over and through the bricks and wood and steel of this construction.

Once you've got to this part of the weir you must either turn back and retrace your steps back to the path, or climb up the weir wall. The wall's actually easier than it looks.
