Old Yew

The tiny village of Beltingham is not only pretty but its St Cuthbert's church is the finest example of C15 perpendicular style in the country. However our visit, as we walked from Barton Mill to the Allendale road, centred on one of the yew trees in the graveyard. As can be seen in the photo, there are two iron bands supporting the trunk, as it is dated as at least 900 years old (there is much discussion on the subject, this could be an underestimate by several decades).

Morning coffee and, after the walk, lunch, were taken at the Shop and Tearoom in Barton Mill, which we can highly recommend.
