Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial

This bronze sculpture of a caribou is the emblem of the brave Newfoundland Regiment - who were all involved in the first day of the Somme on 01.07.1917. Of the 800 men who took part only 68 were able to answer roll call on 02.07.1919.

We then visited the Hawthorn Crater and the Sunken Lane. This was filmed on 01.07.1917.  The Lancashire Fusiliers had a dreadful time here and you can find photos of the crouching in the Sunken Lane before going over the top and many being killed.

My extra is of a mural in Albert.
