My postilion has been struck by lightning!

An uneventful taxi journey from Kiev to Poltava, for the first hour.
Then after about an hour and in some very heavy rain there was a simultaneous flash and loud bang from the roof of the car, and the driver lost power and had to coast to the hard shoulder. He also lost connection on the call that he was making on his mobile phone. The driver and his mate thought that the battery had failed as most electrical systems seemed to have failed. The hazard warning lights only worked intermittently. Eventually, one of them spotted that the radio aerial had disappeared and then it became clear what had happened, the car had been hit by lightning, and that had taken out the engine management system.
With no prospect of getting the car going at the roadside, another taxi was called, and after it had struggled through the traffic in Kiev's rush hour finally arrived and we transferred to that taxi for the remainder of the journey.
That was not all though, after a further 2 hours driving we came to a police roadblock, there had been an accident where a cyclist has been knocked off his bike and died. We were held there for another hour before being allowed to pass, and finally arrived at our destination 5 hours late.
It's always good to confirm scientific theories, and I can now confirm from personal experience that a car is a Faraday cage, and that inside a Faraday cage is a safe place to be during a thunderstorm.
The image is all that was left of the car radio aerial. All the mobile phones, cameras and laptops still worked. Even the car radio still worked, though some stations had disappeared as their signals were too weak for it without an aerial.
I do have some pictures from the last couple of days to post, and will do so at some point soon.
